What is a chakra?
A chakra is a vortex of constantly moving energy. Imagine subtle energies flowing and rotating like gears or becoming blocked and stagnant dependent on our physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. In Sanskrit, the classical language of India, chakra literally means “wheel.” While there may be thousands of chakras in a body, for simplicity’s sake seven primary chakras are usually focused on. They are often depicted as spinning wheels of light forming a ladder from the base of the spine to the top of the head.
Knowledge of the chakra system was passed down orally for generations and documented in Vedic texts around 5,000 years ago, predating modern religions. Ayurveda, the Science of Life, utilizes chakras, foods, herbs, routines, rituals, meditations, elements, and environments in order to balance unevenness in the body, mind, and soul.
Chakras provide a language for the unseen. Simultaneously tangible and symbolic, the spiraling energy of the chakras corresponds with glands in the endocrine system, organs in the body, and nerve ganglia of the spinal column as well as mental, emotional, and spiritual health. Also, each chakra corresponds directly with a color of the rainbow.
Think of your body as a prism. The white light that shines into the prism is the divine life energy that runs through you. This is often called prana, chi, qi, force, charge, shakti, subtle energy, or spirit. The chakras serve as a map of life-force throughout the body, conducting energy from the earth and heavens. Streams, rivers, clouds, and tornados all naturally create this cyclone wheel effect. As non-physical entities, chakras are not bound by Earthly laws of matter, time, and space.
Butterflies in your belly, heartache, a lump in the throat... these euphemisms are real feelings in the human experience, and each of these sensations take place in parts of the body where concentrated energy is being emitted. In fact, the biomagnetic field of a pumping heart or a brain deep in thought can actually be measured.
While energy orbs inside and surrounding our bodies may be a radical concept for some, most people acknowledge there are forces and factors beyond visible reality. X-rays, microwaves, radio waves, and sun rays exist even though we do not see them. If chakras aren’t in your wheelhouse or comfort zone, you can still work with the system as it is a pragmatic check list for organizing life.
Humans are comprised of densely vibrating energy. Cleansing, practicing yoga, meditating, singing, chanting, acupuncture, acupressure, and participating in various forms of food and color therapy are some actions used to raise vibrational resonance and facilitate in balancing the chakra system. This in turn leads to more balanced bodies, relationships, families, communities, and creations.
